The Royal Armouries reprinted a book by Josef Alm called "European =
Crossbows: A Survey", originally written in 1947, but apparently still =
highly regarded (ISBN 0 948092 20 3).

In that Alm states that crossbows were used at the sieges of Senlis in =
947 and Verdun in 985, although his reference seems to be to another =
secondary source.

He also states that the Jomsvikingasaga states that 'lock-bows' (quite a =
good description of a crossbow I think, and apparently the word used for =
crossbows in C12/C13 Normandy) were used at the battle of Hjorungsvag in =
986.

Alm believes the rising pin crossbow to be the earliest type of crossbow =
as it is the simplest mechanism. The earliest surviving rising pin comes =
from the moat of Lillohus castle in southern Sweden, and was found in =
1941. The castle was built around 1480, and was demolished around 1650 - =
a time when we know more complex mechanisms were in use.
