> Tunic= A shape - fuller at bottom than sides, gores, gussets, etc, used
to tailor garments.
Long enough to pull up and pouch at belt- garment draped at belt as needed
for the activities of the wearer. Sleeves long to the wrist- with added
length to cause wrinkles up the arm from the fitted cuff. Various layers of
tunics presumably worn- wool and linen predominate fibers. Silks for the
rich.
Note: In a long exchange three or four years back Carolyn Priest-Dorman and
I came to the conclusion that there is no good evidence for silk tunics
(hence I retired mine). Silk as a trim, most certainly, but not for a
complete garment. Anyone found otherwise?
< snip>
Cloak- possibly hooded, but not a fixed decision yet. Semicircular, or
rectangular shapes. Clasped at center line, or at shoulder with a single
brooch or tie. Upper classes seem to have longer cloaks. Part of
ecclesiastical garments.
Next note: Hiberno-Norse burials show some cloak pins at the hip, left or
right side. This indicates a probable different mode of cloak wear, which
appears to be culturally-specific.
Hats= scull caps. Decision pending on others.
For rowing ? ;-)
