Bill,

I noticed that a couple of years ago a company that produces the Signals 
Catalog had a pewter mether for about $80.  You might want to follow up on that.  
Also,  if you want to make a mether, I recommend that you use a green wood 
with a close grain.  It will warp in a few years, but most wood used for anything 
prior to the Georgian Period was green.
