Hello all,
I'm currently working out a pattern for a copy of the Viborg Shirt. Having
referred to the excellent article available at
_http://www.forest.gen.nz/Medieval/articles/Viborg/VIBORG.HTM_
(http://www.forest.gen.nz/Medieval/articles/Viborg/VIBORG.HTM)
and also borrowing a lovely copy from another Regia member [incredibly kind
and generous with his knowledge and kit!! You know who you are.]
I'm clear on just about everything but the, "Sliding Knots" on the neck of
the shirt. The shirt copy I have has two simple, tight, knots in the tape sewn
around the neck, which goes on to become the ties for the neck opening. This
shirt was made before there was an english translation of the Viborg
material available and is not quite right in a couple of areas. I think this may be
one of them.
The "sliding knots" are described as being, "presumably at the front of the
neck opening" which might indicate that they were completely separate from the
neck tape, so that their position had to be guessed at? Or, that they were
two loosely tied knots in the neck tape, sewn to the front of the neck opening
in such a way that they remained loose enough for each neck ribbon to pass
through the knot opposite it at the neck opening to both close up the neck
flaps, whilst keeping them together. I'm favouring the latter, at the moment,
but thought I'd ask the opinion of the "Great and Good" of Regia.
Thanks,
Nick.
