The gambeson, aketon, or pourpoint are not specifically mentioned in Western 
Europe until after the First Crusade according to David Nicolle.  However, 
there were a variety of hide or leather undertunics that were mentioned in 
sources from the period of Charlemagne including Gregory of Tours' HISTORY OF THE 
FRANKS.  Whether or not, these were survivals of the old Roman thoramachus or 
subarmalis is open to debate.  There are also references to Libyan Hide Armor 
that was in the nature of a buff coat worn over armor or under it.  The TACTIKA 
of Leo mentions some type of padded armor that could be worn under various 
types of metal, horn, and leather armor.  Also, there is some mention in the 
Osprey Elite and Warrior Series dealing with Vikings about a subarmalis made of 
reindeer hide.  You might also check out the books written by the Shadracks.
