If I was doing a driving tour of the Northeast, I would drive up the long
way from New York to Boston via I-95 along the coast through Connecticut and
Rhode Island (longer, but much prettier drive). These are some personal
favorite places to go:

Mystic Seaport
A re-created 19th century village that is part of the USA's leading maritime
museum...fun to climb aboard the ship, the Charles W. Morgan, and ask all
sorts of questions.

Mystic Marinelife Aquarium
Whole lotta fish, Amazon Exhibit and the Titanic...

Abbott's Lobster-in-the-Rough, Noank, CT (near Mystic)
Boiled lobster & corn on the cob served dockside on picnic tables. Simple,
cheap, and really tasty. BYOB. My dad's favorite restaurant. I'm not
kidding.

The Cliffwalk, Newport, Rhode Island
This is a beautiful walking path built in between the sea and Newport's
famous mansions.

The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum on Huntington Avenue in Boston, MA
The Isabella has a collection of masterworks (Rembrandt, Michelangelo,
Sargeant, Titian, and quite a few medieval pieces in the mix), all set up in
such as way that you can get up close and really see the works. The museum
is the former home of a serious art collector who specified in her will that
things be left as she arranged them. The courtyard is wonderful.

The Christian Science Center on Massachusetts Avenue in Boston, MA
This collection of buildings is a brick oasis in the city, with a lovely
large reflecting pool. The Mother Church is occasionally open to visitors.
The Library is worth a visit, as there is an interesting interactive
word-art exhibit there, as well a walk-through stained-glass globe of the
world made in the 1930s called the Maparium. (Reviews of the Science Center
follow.)

The King Fung Garden, 74 Kneeland Street, Boston
If you like Chinese food, this is the place. There are prettier places to
go, but none better than this. I was shocked to find it on the web:

(Chinatown in Boston is fun to stroll around as well.)

Hope you enjoy your trip, whatever route you take!
