[Regia-NA] How many?

Hello all,

I've had an interesting question lobbed at me by a MotP. How many Thegns/Other Ranks in England in "our period"

I'm guessing, of course, but a good average figure for any agrarian society is about ten to one of governors to the
governed. At the time of Domesday, there were about three million people living in Britain, so perhaps 30,000 Thegns
across the whole country? What do you think?

Apparently, our website says " ... around 2,000 Thegns for Wessex and Mercia. " we then go on to describe the
stratification of Ceorls and bondsmen/slaves, but with no estimate as to numbers. I realise that to do so would be
something of a 'guestimation', but...
