Well, it goes back a long way with the Scots and the Germans
but the French added the long drop to it, as opposed to
having the blade hammered down through the victim's neck
in a short frame.

Rats just seem naturally French to me.
They look like Marseilles smugglers and barflies.
It was worth writing up for a laugh anyway.
Maybe they could make a new ride for the Fair out of
it and call it the spanker, with much duller blades
of course.
