Hi Tracie,
What they are is THE big question. (NO they aren't upside down)
It seems that they were worn suspended from the belt, often in pairs in the
early Saxon period.
There are several theories about what they were. Probably not actual keys,
but representations of keys as symbols of authority, hanging hooks to hang
other things from the belt, or even hooks to hold up the hem of a long
dress(!) You pay your money and take your choice.
