If you're having this difficult a time, it's because the textile is a 
"woollen" rather than a "worsted" cloth.  Due to the structure of the wool 
yarns used, worsted textiles are much easier to unravel.  And because 
worsteds are more typical of textiles of the period in question, that means 
they'd have experienced unraveling to a greater degree than you do with a 
woollen textile.  Viewed in this context, hemming makes a great deal more 
sense than you might think.
