Well, strictly speaking, no-one knows. The word appears once, in a
6/7thC document describing the murder of a Frankish King and is never
used again, ever ..... It ahs even been suggested that the 'scram'
epithet might be a derogatory term describing a weapon used by
assassins.

Saex, or even Knif are better words and they have been very adequatly
described by other repliers. 

BTW, Paul Binns work is excellent.
