I'll set up the yurt in the back yard and simulate a hearty rain storm
(garden hose!).  Plants could always use more!

Yes. DON'T!!!

We had this conversation here quite recently and if the cloth is fairly
tight-woven, it will swell with rainwater and keep the rain out. I have
experience of treating a previously fairly waterproof tent which promptly
became a sieve!

My advice - try it first untreated.
