[Regia-NA] Blue tents

I've said my piece on policy, so will now only say this as the row is going
on quite nicely without me!

To short circuit this very type of argument, where already the protagonists
are arguing about what was said and by whom, Regia long ago introduced a
"Mission Command" structure for its officers. The officers are appointed by
the society, voted into their office democratically by the group leaders
voting on behalf of their membership. They are then given wide executive
powers to decide for the whole society what is acceptable and what is not.
The onus is upon the innovator to prove the case they make, not the
society's officer - or they would do nothing else!

Might I cordially invite you to produce a sample of linen canvas dyed to the
same color as your tent cloth from sources available 1000 years ago? I
honestly assure you that such a sample, supplied with notes of process,
would immediately and at once still the flow of well-meant advice.
Manuscript is all very well, but it is tertiary evidence and always open to
interpretation. Results produced by experimentation are a primary reference
and of far more interest and importance to Regia.

We really do have and need one rule for us all Lori. There is increasing two
way traffic across the Atlantic and it must be expected that in the future
there will be an ever increasing number of participants at each others
events - several are attending the Shrewsbury training weekend and Fritton
Lake, Tom Sweeting was at our York show, I have been to the Pennsic War and
demonstrated steel combat, Sonnie and Linda and myself have toured the West
Coast and met up with Regia members - and that is just off the top of my
head.

Although we are only dickering about colour, it is the principal I strive to
maintain, not the individual case. Say someone turned up at an event with a
sword with a wrought iron blade - or even a spring steel blade that was not
properly heat treated. The resultant burring on the softer material would be
very dangerous to all concerned and the sword would be banned from the
battlefield on the spot regardless of the strength of the archaeological
provenance for wrought iron!. The Master At Arms regulations (available from
the archive on this website) set out what is required and I agree entirely
that this matter would never have arisen in the first place if there was a
clear Guidance Note about what is OK and what isn't..

But at the end of the day, we must all sing from the same hymn sheet, Lori.

Regards,

Kim Siddorn,
Eolder.

Subject: [Regia] Information

> Here in N.A. I have seen repeated requests for information which sometimes
are not responded to in spite of what appears to be the member's enthusiasm
for any and all info.
> The email method can be a hit or miss affair and consequently cannot be
regarded as an air-tight solution in seeking answers.
> Heree in North America we need all sorts of refererence material and Tom's
efforts in establishing a pictorial reference can only be regarded as a
great and significant step forward in this area.
> I spoke to Lori the other day to learn just how much effort she has put
into researching her geteld and hear from the list the reasons posited why
her choice of colour is not acceptable.
> In my view she has complied by all accounts and while the fact is that not
many people would have a blue tent then perhaps we need to add more on the
topic of "What is not acceptable IN REGIA" in our resource materials.
