I have been looking into incorporation myself for a local group (not =
Regia). It's certainly not an impossible task, but it has some =
complications. Should the corporation have members or not? How do I =
interpret the state forms where form 1 says you can't file form 1 until =
you've filed form 2 and form 2 says you can't file form 2 until you've =
filed form 1. And so forth. But there are plenty of places where you =
can get advice and help, there's just a matter of cost.
To do it completely, you need to incorporate at the state level and get =
your tax-exempt status at the federal level.
The fees can add up to a few hundred dollars. And if you want legal =
advice, that can cost too. A good lawyer can cost $5000 to walk you =
through the entire process. But a CPA can be just as useful as a lawyer =
for a lot less and there are even Internet services that can help you =
through the process for less money.
Also, remember that insurance generally just protects from liability =
representatives of the corporation in the pursuit of their duties. It's =
not some sort of blanket safety net for all members of the group.
I'm estimating right now that I'll spend about $700 between state fees, =
federal fees and legal advice to incorporate my group. I could spend =
less if I was more comfortable with my own ability to navigate the =
bureaucracies.
Somebody else mentioned something to the effect that this process needs =
an owner (somebody to take the reins, if I remember the phrase). That's =
very true, and I would presume that it should be an officer of the =
organization.

Well, see this is why you might need insurance. ;D
Seriously, In California, all I know is that if you request to reserve =
space in a county park, you get a price break if you are non-profit, and =
unless you want to keep your hacking and slashing a secret from the =
rangers (good luck), you need insurance.
Thanks for the input you guys. I'm glad I could provoke a discussion.
