Erm, AC motors without brushes are called Squirrel Cage motors and are =
quite common - my washing machine has one and its regulated by varying =
the voltage and current in the field coils.=20

Single phase AC generators can be built on the same principal - or at =
least, so I'm told by Tim Pullin.

I'm moving towards the capacitor solution, I think, as they are =
otherwise too simple to fail without doing so catastrophically

Kim Siddorn.

Hmmm.....the capacitor may have gone, they do this sometimes, with no =
obvious signs of having done so. But it's unlikely.=20
No brushes??? Be it an AC genny, with slip rings, or a DC with a =
commutator ( or is it the other way round on a generator?), it should =
have carbon brushes in it somewhere, or it really ain't gonna work!
The other thing to do is put your multimeter onto AC Volts, put =
the probes into the output socket and fire it up, then measure the =
output voltages. If you have voltage under this no-load condition, then =
reconnect your load (known good power tool, etc), and measure again with =
that switched on. If there is no voltage, then you may have a problem in =
the windings, in which case- bin it.

      Good Luck

I have just bought another 240/110V generator. It was cheap because =
the generator doesn't. Haverhill generators appear to have departed this =
life, so I can't ask them. It is a 2 KVA unit.=20
The engine (5hp Briggs and Stratton) works fine, fires up and runs =
straight away, but almost nothing comes out of the genny. I plugged a =
power tool into it and it just turns very slowly and intermittently. I =
don't have any 110V power tools, so I can't check that side.

I've checked the connections inside the plastic cover with a multi =
meter, getting continuity everywhere and no current going to earth. =
There are no brushes fitted (no slip ring) and there is a big capacitor =
under the plastic cover (5" x 1")=20

There appears to be no damage either physical or electrical.

Any ideas what I should check next???

    Regards,

    Kim Siddorn.
