Heirlooms are not a new idea at all
Even in the world of helmets.

The Gjermundbu is thought to be an heirloom put in that Viking Age grave
(by some)
There is even a theory that the Valsgarde/Vendel helms were antiquidated
(thus heirlooms) when they were placed in those graves.
Its even thought by some that the Sutton Hoo was a one time gift of
diplomacy that became an heirloom.

But for the most part these are all theories and cant really be proven.

Heirlooms are a tricky aspect of what we do IMO.
The concept is way to often used by reenactors to justify something that
they probably wouldn't have had but WANT to have around anyway.

Slippery Slope IMO.
