[Regia-NA] Depressed Anglo-Saxons?

In many of the secondary sources that I've read
(essays on 'The Seafarer', for example, or 'Beowulf',
or studies of Anglo-Saxon art), A-S culture is often
described as bleak and pessimistic. You get an image
of fur-clad depressives sitting in mud huts, trying to
stay out of the incessant drizzle and singing about
how life stinks. And this contrasts strongly with the
cliches about happy Celts dancing with leprechauns in
sunny oak groves, or partying with talking salmon.

Have any of you picked up this same message from your
reading? Or have any of you come across books that
give historically sound but less gloomy pictures of
Anglo-Saxon culture?
