  Hi Charlotte

I am answering for Hazel as we were both at the same lecture where the subject of belt loops came up. It was a lecture on Vikings in the North West of England given by the former County Archaeologist. He told us of two belt loops found within his area of responsibility.

A belt loop was found on the remains of two seperate belts in two different locations. You will not have heard about them as the finds are relatively recent and have not yet been published. We were treated, however to photos of the two belt loops. One was made of iron and as far as I can recall was fastened to the plate used to fasten the buckle itself to the leather of the belt. The second loop was not of iron, but of leather and was in about the same position on it's belt. The rest of the belt did not survive in either case.

I do not know if there was, as now on many belts, two loops, one fixed near the buckle and one floating . But that is how I wear my belt nowadays - and not with the re-enactors knot and dangly bit.

    Hazel--

You mentioned a few iron belts loops have been found in situ up in the North of England. I've not heard of them before. Can you be more specific? I'm very interested in finding out more about them! Thanks!
