The leather used on the Jorvik shoes for (semi) decorative top-bands was 
normal (calfskin, mostly, for our period) leather, turned so that the grain 
(smooth) side was inside and the flesh (furry) side was outside.

For the projceted uses (i.e. decorative and tensile for toggles) I don't 
think that it would matter which way the leather was turned.
