The most gory prolonged execution belongs to the French who
dealt with a regicide. This one even made the executioners
sick, and that one family did it for generations before
and after the French Revolution. The French government
ministers dreamed that one up, not the executioners.
There was a detailed version in a book club biography of
the family. How that thing got to be a book club edition
I have no idea. Book Clubs to me seem to be made up of
lonely little old ladies usually, the History Book Club
aside. Been a long time since I have read it but it is
in the library. It's so old I think it has a bookshelf. ;)

If you want to make a real mess of a thing, hand it over
to a committee. The only memorial to one I know of was
the painting of the Continental Congress, and they argued
for a long, long time.

You will note I am not giving the details here. :)

By contrast Monsieur Ratattui's suicide seems tame.

Magnus
