Interesting ... I can see your average well off Thegn riding to battle on a
Rough Inferior that he inherited from his grandfather. He has a Vincent, of
course, but only uses it for church on Sundays. The main body of the Select
Fyrd will be Triumph  mounted for the most part as it is the only thing
still left in production. Immediately behind them are a considerable number
of lorries laden with trestle tables, cups, saucers, plates and silver for
the garden party afterwards.

The Viking invader would be more likely to arrive on a battered old BMW,
shield across his back and spear strapped along the frame with a frayed
bungee. He will naturally be wearing a cutoff jack with added fur and wild
boar skins cross gartered about his legs. Younger men will arrive a little
later on a noisy and fast collection of two strokes which they will sit on
looking dissolute and revving in the brrrm, brrrm style to the intense
annoyance of their elders.

Norman knights will of course be mounted on a very eclectic selection of
Guzzis, Laverdas, Ducatis and Moto Morinis. Each will be heavily customised
and their wargear will be poncified to the point of decadence. The body of
the army will be on Rotax engined trail bikes in a variety of army colours.
Many will have been derived from second hand sources and some will have seen
service in the Balkans. After several hours, a number of lorries and
caravans turn up with the horses. They will park the vans in the fields and
never bother to apply for planning permission.

Not so at all! Vikings wouldn't ride Lead Wings or Hardly Worthitsons 'cos
they're too slow and don't go round corners. Saxons ride Gold Stars, Vikings
ride Tritons and Normans ride Ducatis and Laverdas 'cos they got 'em from
Italy.
