couldn't you construct some sort of corset-like
undergarment that would give you the support you need,
without the very modern straps?
That brings another question to mind--lacing. Had they
begun lacing up garments for better fit yet? Seems
like that's more 12th and 13th C., isn't it?
I just got notice that my membership application was
received. Now I need to assemble the proper kit.
I have a wooden plate (round), a wooden bowl with
straight sides, a pottery cup without handles and a
sort of brown glaze, wooden spoons, and an eating
knife. I also have a very small viking style scissors.
I have drop spindles of various sizes and shapes, most
all with wooden whorls, and Viking wool combs. My one
wool gown is not in a period weave, so I'll need to
make another. I have linen/cotton blend fabrics, but
my lightweight gowns are also not quite of the correct
cut, so I'll need another. I have at least one woven
belt, a long leather belt with a round buckle without
tang. I need shoes. I have assorted candle holders.
One is about 15" tall, turned, with tripod feet.
I have a linen peplos that I wear in the SCA for
summer here (think 100+ degrees), but I think it's too
early period for Regia. The SCA covers around 1000
years of time, and for general tournament stuff, as
long as it doesn't look modern, no one minds much.
I know that Regia holds to a much tighter standard,
and I want to do this right, so how do I check myself
against what's being used by Regia? Should I
photograph my stuff and send pictures to someone so
they can let me know if it's proper? Is there a source
for proper period gear (that's not priced completely
out of sight) that I can't make or find at places like
Cost Plus?
