Dear Eric--

I've only watched turnshoes being made, so I'll leave the answers =
regarding weight, leather type, etc. for those who've worked with the =
stuff themselves.

But the first thing you need is a good pattern (before you start with =
the leather), and that part I can describe fairly accurately. So here =
goes--

In order to get the turnshoes to fit the way you want, with prescription =
inner soles, your best bet is to wear the socks you will wear with the =
shoes, and use the inner soles when making the pattern. My husband used =
muslin & 2 file folders to make the shoe patterns for my turnshoes =
(based on one of the Oseberg ankle boots in the June Swann book).

1. Wearing the socks I intended to wear with the shoes, I stood on the =
opened-up manila file folder, with all my weight on the one foot we were =
working with (much easier with a partner). He traced very closely =
around the bottom of my foot and then cut out on the lines, adding a =
pointy front bit near the big toe and a pointy heel stiffener in back. =
You might want to do this step standing on the inner soles and trace =
around them and your foot, depending on the shape of the inner soles. =
So that's the sole pattern.

2. He cut a piece of muslin roughly like the pattern from the book, =
only larger on all the top seams. He taped the bottom part to the sole, =
and I put the muslin-and-manila shoe on. Standing with the weight on =
that foot again, he marked where all the excess was.

3. I took off the shoe, he cut off the excess and taped the muslin up =
into a shoe. I tried the shoe back on to see if there were minor =
adjustments to be made. (The finished shoes fit well and are very =
comfortable.)

That's the pattern process in a nutshell. The benefit is that you end =
up with a pattern that you can use over and over--and use to figure out =
how much leather you'll need to buy.

Hope this helps!

--charlotte mayhew

p.s. If anyone can recommend a good source for thick goatskin for =
shoemaking, I'd appreciate it!

Subject: [Regia-NA] Turn shoes - HELP!

  Greetings,

  =20

I am a lurker to the group and have been reading intently most =
everything posted. I have decided recently to try my hand and a pair of =
turn shoes (the Jorvik ankle boot type) and I have a few questions. I =
have worked a bit with leather, creating knife scabbards, arrow quivers =
and a few other odds and ends, but I've never tried something as =
ambitious as this.

  =20

I've read several web sites and have a few patterns of the ankle boot =
that I'd like to try.  My questions are this;

  =20

    1.. What weight leather should I use?=20
    2.. I wear a size 9 to 9 =BD (US measurement, 8.5 UK and 42.5 =
European), about how many square feet (US measurement) of leather will I =
need?=20
3.. Which pattern would be easiest or best for a first timer?=20
4.. Do I need a heavier weight for soles or do I even need to attach =
a separate sole?=20
5.. Should I make the boots to fit the foot or should I make them a =
bit larger to accommodate stockings?=20
6.. Can prescription inner soles be used inside and how would one =
pad the shoe bottom?=20
  =20

Any other ideas suggestions or comments please let me know via the =
internet posts. I really need some help on this info.

  =20

  Thanks,

  =20

  Eric M. Lyman

  Baton Rouge, LA
