My husband recently finished an antler comb made from an elk antler =
(North American elk, that is). The antler was purchased at Pennsic last =
year. Sometimes you can get antler at Indian Pow-Wows. One thing I can =
say for sure is you need a lot more antler, and in larger pieces than =
you'd suspect because you can only use the hard part between the outer =
(cuticle?) part and the inner spongey (core) part. Which means =
interesting sections. Here's his brief description of the project (some =
links and references which might be helpful).

As far as leather goes, if you're willing to buy it sight-unseen and =
online, you can try The Leather Factory online--they do have some retail =
stores, so you might be near one of them. There are some SCA merchants =
that sell half-cow pieces of leather and such, if you're willing to go =
to SCA events. Usually the large ones, and they're often listed on the =
event website, so you'll know ahead of time if it's worth it.
Hope that's some help!

Magnus mentioned that he has bone blanks for needles - thanks so much, =
Magnus!
I was wondering where people go to get bone strong enough & large =
enough to make carved combs? Or do you buy them?
Also, where do people go for larger pieces of leather? Now that Tandy =
is out of business, I don't know where to go. The saddle shop has =
leftovers which are great for shoes & small bags, but the only larger =
pieces are very thick & un-yielding.
Martin: Have you gotten my first envelope, yet? =20
