Jennifer,
=20
Grantanbrygc, my local Regia group, is a group composed mainly of
Anglo-Danes. We've adopted this to reflect the population of East =
Anglia at
the time.=20
=20
The interaction of the local populations (Saxon) and the newcomers =
(Norse),
varied depending on the area of England and time period. For the most =
part,
relations were good. There were of course, rough points, such as the =
St.
Brice's Day Massacre. The Norse themselves were quick to adopt local
customs, mannerisms and dress. Here in East Anglia, most of the Norse =
were
quickly absorbed into the local population due to intermarriages. So =
in
later periods, it would have been a bit difficult to distinguish a =
Saxon
from a Viking by general appearance. About the only way I know of =
would be
by names, and even then there was adoption...a Dane, married to a Saxon
woman, might give his children A/S names. =20
=20
Earlier, the Norse would have been conquerors, taking what they wanted, =
and
occupying a foreign land; such as the wintering of the army at =
Thetford.
But, as years would pass between the successive changing of territorial
control, the newcomers would have become just the same as any other =
local;
subservient to whichever lord was in power at the time. New =
settlements
would have happened, with pure Norse inhabitants, but again, over time, =
the
distinction would have faded with movements of persons in and out, and
intermarriages. I don't believe the image we have of the Viking =
"manifest
destiny" (the bold adventurer, single-handedly going forth to claim a =
new
land) is appropriate for us; I think that is a little stereotypical as =
well.

=20
The language barrier wouldn't have been too difficult to overcome as =
the
Norse would have started using A/S, and vice-versa...why we can trace =
Norse
words in our vocabulary.
=20
This is written quickly off the cuff, and very generalized, but I hope =
it
answers some of your questions.

I am curious about what things Norse affect the daily life of an =
Anglo-Saxon
of the same period. That is, Anglo-Dane, Viking, etc... =20
Would the people have generally had friendly relations? Intermarried?
Shared skills?
Or... was there a sense of "this is my valley & you need to keep yr =
stinking
fingers out of it!" attitude?
Please feel free to respond off-list so the rest of the list doesn't =
have to
endure my beginner's laundry list of questions.... =20
