Hello Jennifer

I have already sent you a short reply via Theod, but will try to answer =
your specific questions in this mail.

The dyes commonly available to the Saxons in England during the period =
you mention are Weld (for Yellow (and green if iron is used )), Madder =
(for orange) and Woad (for blue). Dyeing with Weld and Madder is quite =
straightforward - just using the dyestuff, mordant (usually alum) and =
water.

Dyeing authentically with woad is a lengthy and smelly process using =
urine. For convenience nowadays we tend to use indigo and dyeing with =
more modern chemicals and a result can be obtained the same day - =
usually darker than dyeing with woad.

You can use the leaves of the woad plants that have been pulled. The =
leaves from the first year of the plant's life are best as they are =
bigger and stronger, but you can get a result from the second year =
leaves.

We have only once done a fully authentic woad dye and when the time came =
to take the wool out of the dye bath my wife (Hazel - Regia's textile =
coordinator)) my daughter (Jenny - the Chair of Regia Anglorum's High =
Witan) and my son-in law Jon (A deputy Military Training Officer and =
deputy Master at Arms in Regia) all fled the scene until I had washed =
the wool to get rid of the smell (I do not have a sense of smell :-) )

A viking tent has an A frame with the frames extending up out of the =
front and rear of the tents with animal type decoration on them. They =
are self standing. The Saxon style tent (or geteld - pronounced yeteld) =
is usually a ridge tent and requires to be pegged, although in Regia in =
UK there are some that have an A frame.

I hope that helps a little

  Hello. I am interested in the Anglo-Saxon period approx 8th/9th C. I =
know less than nothing & would greatly appreciate any assistance.
I believe it is easier to begin well than to have to go back & do =
things over after discovering that one has everything wrong.
The books available at the local library hale from the 30's. =
Suggestions?
Also, I hope to do some dye projects this summer & would like your =
thoughts on materials... I'm familiar w/ where to purchase natural =
dyestuffs like indigo, madder, etc, but am not sure of the safety =
precautions, nor exactly what would be available to the people in that =
period.
Woad is a noxious weed here in northeastern Nevada & is prohibited by =
law. [to grow, not to use] I believe they have a woad warrior thingie =
going on... pulling the plants & leaving them on the ground. If I were =
to go on this eradication jaunt, would the plants be useful for dyeing?
What is the difference between a Viking tent & a geteld? [how is that =
pronounced, anyway? w/ a "g" or a "y" sound?]
I recognized Carolyn Priest-Dornan's name [did I get it right?] from a =
couple of weaving lists & from her excellent web site.
I spin & weave, but have hesitated to get involved in "natural" dyeing =
due to health concerns - I'm very chemically sensitive. However, I've =
tho't about giving it a go this summer, wearing suitable protective =
gear.
As for clothing, camp gear, crafts [I want to learn naalbinding & =
sprang & WW weaving], I am open to suggestions & eager to learn.
  Yrs, Jennifer
