No kidding?  :-) I think we have probably all fallen into that one...  
it might be fun sometime to compile something along the lines of an 
urban legend FAQ dealing with these kinds of things... you know, horned 
helms on Vikings, "Celts", period pagan religious practices versus 
modern ones, etc.
