Forgot to mention, Anna Comnena gives a clear description of the =
crossbow (she was writing at the time of the First Crusade). She claims =
it was unknown amongst the Greeks, and was brought to the East by "the =
barbarians" her term for the Crusaders. Crossbows were recorded as being =
used during the siege of Jerusalem in 1099.
I've also tracked down some more information about the use of crossbows =
at Senlis, apparently they were used to drive off the attackers, so they =
may actually be the large 'arbalast' types the Romans had to help defend =
their forts, but I can't find what the original primary reference is, so =
that's just a guess.
