That was always my understanding...a fired pot will be able to withstand
cooking, although they probably were put directly on the fire, but to the
side (I remember something archeological in that generally only one side is
fire-blackened?) to heat gradually.  Or, a heated stone could be dropped in
to heat the contents.

if the pots are baked in the kiln at high temps they are more able to take
the heat of fire I am told.
My 3 cooking pots sit on the coals beautifully.
