Remains of Viking warrior uncovered in Dublin
ProLog [USA], 12-Aug-2003

Archaeologists said Tuesday they had uncovered the remains of a=20
Viking warrior during excavations on a building site in the Irish=20
capital.=20
A skeleton was found with an iron shield and what appeared to be a=20
dagger in a shallow grave near the centre of Dublin,
according to archaeologist Linzi Simpson.=20
The site is near the ninth century settlement of
Dubh Linn, a Gaelic phrase denoting "black pool", from which Dublin=20
gets its name.=20
The burial site of the warrior, now nicknamed Eric by archaeologists,=20
appears to have been disturbed at some stage in the past and his=20
sword is missing.=20
Simpson believes he may have been part of an early raiding party that=20
arrived about 40 years before a Viking settlement was established in=20
Dublin.
