A second question... what is the earliest one can justify a padded, quilted
linen or wool garment in an armour context? Either under maille or worn alone,
specifically in Western Europe. My portrayal is of an 11th century Norman
Sergen. Some of the armours in the Bayeux Tapestry look like diamond quilted
armous, while other diamond patterned armours are clearly stylized
representations of maille.
Are there any other reliable primary sources for the appearance of an 11th
century Norman soldier aside from the Bayeux Tapestry? Specifically before the
First Crusade.
Thanks in advance,
~Wil
