while his stuff is exception it really isn't any more accurate for our
period than the Indian riveted mail.
I say this as so far I haven't been able to site an period (pre 1066) mail
with the wedge shaped rivets that Mr. Sheldon uses and often states are the
"only way" it was done. Cross section of many of the rivets in extant period
mail don't reveal any wedge shaped rivets AFAIK

Am I missing a crucial piece of evidence?

Steven Sheldon of Forth Armoury in Georgia (USA) has asked me to review his
riveted mail and I have one of his coifs for you to look at. I'll have it
with me at the Witan.

My initial impressions are very favourable and the ring section looks very
flat because it is! The riveting is very clean and tidy and it is by far the
best I've seen outside the Wallace Collection or the Royal Armouries.
