I was reading an old article on the Sutton Hoo Shield I got in this
last week by Herbert Maryon which drew very close parallels
between the Sutton Hoo Shield's decoration and that of the Valsgarde.

--the shield found in the Morken grave also bears an uncanny resemblance =
to shields found in both the Valsg=E4rde/Vendel graves and the Sutton =
Hoo grave.

though it has been suggested that the Sutton Hoo items were either made =
in Sweden or by a Swede in the Anglian Court, the more I read the more I =
begin to believe that all the Valsgardeesqe items found at Sutton Hoo =
were diplomatic gifts at some point in time.

it is also interesting to note that even though the foil work is similar =
on the helms from Valsg=E4rde and Sutton Hoo some say the only visual =
evidence for the splinted armor (like that found in the V8 grave) is on =
the Sutton Hoo Helm.

one of the foils shows a fallen warrior on his back, on his arm holding =
a spear (actually near his wrist) are what can be interpreted as splint =
armor. The author of an article in the Journal of the Arms and Arms =
Society Vol 1 suggest a glove with splint type defenses are probably =
more likely, but the evolution from one to the other isn't that far.
